What Is a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) Program in BC?
A Healthcare Assistant Diploma (HCA) in British Columbia is a 26‑week (745‑hour), instructor-led, in-class program that trains individuals to become front-line caregivers in roles such as:
Home support workers
Assisted living attendants
Complex care aides
Hospital support staff
Adult day-care assistants
Upon graduation, students are qualified to register with the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry, enabling them to work in regulated, publicly funded healthcare settings
Who Is This Program For?
Domestic learners: Canadian citizens, permanent residents, refugees, work‑permit and study‑permit holders
Highly motivated career-switchers: Individuals seeking to enter healthcare careers without lengthy degree programs
International students already in Canada: Eligible if they meet language and security requirements
Refugee Claimants: Approved refugee claimants can upskill and become HCAs.
Work Permit Holders: Due to the program duration of 26 weeks, work permit holders can study without a study permit.


Entry Requirements
Academic Prerequisites
Completion of Grade 10 (or equivalent) or adult/mature learner status
English Language Competency:
If >3 years full-time instruction in English: proof of English 10 or equivalent
If <3 years: official standardized English test scores
International Students
Clear police certificate from country of origin
Pre-Placement Certifications (must be completed before practicum begins)
In-person First Aid + CPR Level C or BLS
FoodSafe Level 1
WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials)
Violence Prevention e‑learning
Adult Abuse Recognition & Response modules
BC Care Aide Practice in BC modules via e-learning
SPECO orientation checklist (via provincial healthcare LearningHub)
Immunizations per healthcare facility standards (TB test cannot be exempted)
Criminal Record Check with vulnerable adult clearance
